Laser - the Most Effective Method for Tattoo Removal

How laser tattoo removal works, which laser we use, possible side effects and what to know.

Who among us hasn't made rash decisions in their youth? A partner's name became tattooed letters on the skin forever, and the little dolphin on the ankle once looked so cute! But when the relationship ends, your mood changes, or the little dolphin turns into an impressive whale, tattoos can become less desirable.

Tired of your old tattoo? Don't want to put up any longer with faded colours or a design that no longer reflects who you are? Tattoo removal is exactly the solution for you! Changes in life or in the body lead many people to want to part with their old tattoos.

Today, thanks to advanced laser technology, almost any tattoo can be removed or significantly lightened, gently and with a low risk of scarring. Your first step towards tattoo-free skin starts here.

The advanced pico Nd:YAG laser device is designed to achieve optimal treatment results as quickly as possible. The laser operates in the range of picoseconds and releases short pulses of light energy. The light penetrates the skin in a focused way, hits only the colour pigments that were introduced into the skin and breaks them down - while sparing the surrounding skin as much as possible.

After the treatment, your lymphatic system begins a process lasting several weeks in which it clears the colour pigments from the body. Sometimes a dry layer (scab) may form on the skin, which helps clear the colour from the body. Complete tattoo removal usually requires several treatments, spaced several weeks apart. The number of treatments depends on several factors, including:

  • Tattoo colour
  • Tattoo size
  • Ink depth
  • Amount of ink introduced
  • Lymphatic system function
  • Your cooperation after the treatments

Spectra PicoPulse - an Innovative Picosecond Laser

[readmore]

Picosecond technology has existed since 2013, when the PicoSure was at the peak of its popularity. However, at that time the technology was not yet mature enough.

The new PicoPulse from Spectra is an advanced picosecond system. At Dermacare we work with an advanced pico laser, offering a combination of safety and effectiveness like a nanosecond laser, together with improved performance and results thanks to picosecond technology.

The advantages of the PicoPulse laser:

  • New-generation picosecond laser: Advanced technology that delivers improved results in tattoo removal treatments.
  • Better treatment results: Thanks to the precision and effectiveness of pico technology, better results can be achieved.
  • Pico technology with four wavelengths (1064, 532, 585 and 650 nanometres): Allows treatment of almost all tattoo colours, including shades that are hard to remove with other lasers.
  • A more comfortable experience: Treatment with the PicoPulse may be more comfortable compared with traditional laser systems.
  • Often fewer treatments: In many cases the desired lightening can be achieved in fewer sessions than with other laser systems.
  • Lower thermal reaction: The treatment causes less heating in the tattoo area, which leads to faster healing.
  • High power with shorter pulses: Thanks to short pulses that are highly focused, it is possible to treat with higher power and achieve more effective results.

Question Pico (Picosecond): why it is better Nano (Nanosecond): what is important to know What is the difference in one line? A very short pulse that aims for more mechanical breakdown of the ink and less heat spreading to the surroundings during the pulse. What it means for you: sometimes a stronger result without unnecessary "drama" in the skin. A longer pulse. Still very effective, especially on black, but sometimes there is more reliance on heating of the surrounding tissue to reach the effect. Pico or nano for a black tattoo? If the tattoo is dense black, professional, deep or "stubborn", pico usually has an advantage in consistency and in reaching a high level of lightening. In comparative studies under the same conditions, a tendency for pico to lighten more was found. Nano 1064 can be excellent for simple black tattoos. In denser tattoos, more patience or adjustments are sometimes needed to reach the same level. Is pico really less "heating" and therefore safer? There is usually less spread of heat to the surroundings during the pulse, so in some cases the skin reacts more calmly. This does not mean "no risk", but it can reduce the skin reaction for the same treatment goal. Nano is also safe in good hands, but when the parameters need to be pushed, in some situations the skin reaction can be stronger. Blisters and scabs: which side has less chance? Sometimes less, mainly in dense tattoos and sensitive skin, because good breakdown can be achieved with less reliance on heating of the surrounding tissue. Still: if the work is too aggressive or if there is a tan, blisters can appear with pico too. May be more common in certain situations, especially if there is a tan, dense ink or overly aggressive treatment. Marks after treatment (dark or light): what is better for skin that tends to react? In skin that tends to develop marks, pico is usually the more conservative choice because it may reduce irritation and heating of the surrounding tissue. Still, what is decisive is professional suitability and sun protection. It is certainly possible to work safely, but in dark or tanned skin the risk of marks rises if the protocol and sun protection are not carefully observed. Does pico remove a tattoo in fewer treatments? Often yes, especially when a high level of lightening is needed or when the tattoo is dense. There is no promise of a fixed number, because the body needs time to clear the ink between sessions. Can reach a good result, but sometimes requires more sessions to reach the same level of lightening in "difficult" cases. How many treatments and how long between treatments? In most cases it is still a process of several sessions, with breaks of weeks between sessions to allow healing and ink clearance. Pico does not eliminate the healing time; it improves the effectiveness of each session. The same principle. Nano also needs intervals, otherwise the risk of irritation, blisters and marks increases. Colours: where does pico really feel like an upgrade? If there is blue, green or yellow, pico usually has a clearer advantage. In addition, a wide set of wavelengths in the device can improve suitability for different inks and for complex cases. Nano can treat colours, but the response is sometimes less consistent with stubborn colours, depending on the system and wavelength. What is the simplest research finding that explains why pico? In a prospective randomised study on tattoos, the rate of achieving improvement of over 75% was higher with pico compared with nano in single-colour black or blue tattoos. In the same study, nano still showed improvement; it simply reached a very high level less often in that setting. So why choose pico, in one sentence? When the aim is to maximise the chance of a clean and consistent result, and sometimes also shorten the process and reduce the skin reaction, especially if the tattoo is dense black or if your skin tends to develop marks and blisters. For simple black tattoos and on a limited budget, nano in professional hands can be a good solution, but usually less premium.

Medical note: The information is general and does not replace a personal consultation. Protocol adjustment is determined only after a professional assessment according to skin type, ink density and location.

It is important to clarify that tattoo removal at Dermacare is an aesthetic treatment, is not a medical treatment, and does not replace medical advice.
In cases of special medical conditions, unusual sensitivities or active skin diseases, we may recommend seeking medical advice before starting the process.

This transparency is part of our commitment to a responsible, safe process and to setting the right expectations.

[/readmore]

As with any aesthetic treatment based on laser energy, temporary local reactions may occur, such as redness, swelling, sensitivity in the treated area and sometimes the formation of light scabs.
These reactions are usually temporary and pass in line with the aftercare instructions.

Not every tattoo can be removed completely, and the result depends on various factors such as the type of ink, its depth, the tattoo colours and the individual skin response. Presenting this information in advance allows for a responsible process and the right expectations.

The price of laser tattoo removal varies according to several main factors, so there is no single price that suits every case. The cost is determined by the size of the tattoo, the number of colours, the depth of the pigment in the skin, the area of the body, the skin type and the rate at which the lymphatic system clears the ink. Small black tattoos are considered simpler to remove, and at the Dermacare clinic treatment prices start from ILS 250 for a small tattoo using advanced pico technology. Larger, colourful or deeper tattoos will usually require more sessions and a gradual process, so the total cost will be higher. Using a pico laser allows precise breakdown of the pigment with less heat and less strain on the skin, which may shorten the duration of the process and reduce side effects. To receive an accurate price estimate and a personalised treatment plan, we recommend coming for a professional assessment at the clinic.

Between treatments, it is recommended to wait about 4–6 weeks, to allow the skin and the immune system to recover. It is important that the area heals completely before the next treatment is performed.

Before the treatment, please tell us about any medication you are taking, especially medication that increases sensitivity to light. Do not stop any regular medication without consulting your doctor. After the treatment, keep the area completely dry and clean for two days to prevent infection. Throughout the entire treatment period, it is recommended to avoid sun exposure on the tattoo area.

During tattoo removal, the laser beam hits the colour pigments and breaks them down. The shattered pigments are absorbed by the body and gradually cleared through the lymphatic system in a natural cleansing process.

The treated area will be red and swollen at first. If a scab forms, do not remove it, to prevent scarring. In people with very dark skin, pigmentation marks may appear. It is important to follow our treatment instructions in order to minimise the risk of bacterial infections.

The Steps of Laser Tattoo Removal

To make treatment more comfortable, the area is air-cooled. If you want to reduce the sensation, you can apply numbing cream beforehand.

  1. Digital Photo of the Tattoo

    1

Before each treatment, a digital photo of your tattoo is taken to document the progress of the treatment accurately.

  2. Disinfection

    2

After the area is disinfected, the laser treatment begins, and the sensation is similar to that of the tattooing process itself. If you wish to reduce the sensation to a minimum, it is recommended to apply an anaesthetic cream beforehand.

  3. Laser Treatment

    3

The tattoo is then treated with a special pico Nd:YAG laser. To make the treatment more comfortable, the tattoo is cooled with air.

  4. Cooling After the Treatment

    4

After the treatment, place a cold compress on the treated area for a few minutes.

After about 4-6 weeks, significant lightening of the tattoo will be visible and the next treatment can be performed.

Do You Have More Questions About Laser Tattoo Removal?

The number of treatments required to remove a tattoo varies from person to person. Extremely small tattoos can in rare cases be removed within a small number of treatments, but usually it is a lengthy process. The number of treatments depends on various factors, such as whether the tattoo was done by an amateur or a professional, the colours and composition of the inks, the size of the tattoo and the texture of the skin, the depth and density of the ink, the response of the lymphatic system, and the quality of aftercare following removal. Usually, an improvement can be seen after each treatment, as the tattoo gradually fades. Complete removal always requires a series of treatments.

Yes. Pain may occur during tattoo removal, depending on individual sensitivity and the treated area. The sensation of pain is similar to that felt when the tattoo itself was applied.

Yes. The laser is capable of breaking down all colour pigments. However, black or dark blue tattoos are easier to remove. Light colours are more challenging to remove, as damage to the skin must be avoided. During the treatment, the colour of the tattoo may change, in which case several additional treatments may be needed.

The treated area will initially be red and swollen. If a scab forms, do not remove it, to prevent scarring. In people with very dark skin, pigmentation spots may appear. It is important to follow our treatment instructions in order to minimise the risk of bacterial infections.

No. Tattoo removal with Dermacare's Nd:YAG laser is gentle on the skin and does not leave scars, as long as the patient follows our practitioner's instructions. However, in people with particularly tanned skin, lighter areas of pigmentation may appear.

Before the treatment, avoid medications that increase sensitivity to light, unless they are taken regularly.
After the treatment, keep the area completely dry and clean for two days to prevent infection.
Throughout the whole course of treatments, it is recommended to avoid sun exposure on the tattoo area.

The duration of the treatment depends on the size of the tattoo and the cooling time afterwards. We allow at least 30 minutes for each treatment.

Yes. The area can be completely re-tattooed at a later stage.
