Why is it important to lighten a tattoo before a cover-up?

A cover-up is a great way to turn an old or unloved tattoo into a new, stunning work of art. However, it is not always easy to cover an existing tattoo, especially if it is dark or extensive.

In such cases, tattoo lightening with laser treatment can be the decisive step to ensure a successful and precise cover-up.

Tattoo lightening – when is it important?

When tattoo lightening makes sense, which design options it opens up and which technology we use.

The biggest challenge in a cover-up is the need for the new design to cover the old tattoo. When it comes to dark tattoos or ones with strong pigment, the problem is magnified, because the old colour may show through the new design. Without tattoo lightening, the tattoo artist will have to use darker colours, which limits the design options. In addition, the new tattoo will usually be larger and less detailed.

Lightening the tattoo before the cover-up ensures that the old design fades sufficiently to allow creative freedom for the tattoo artist. This means that finer details can be incorporated, lighter colours can be used and the new tattoo can be designed in a more artistic way. With tattoo lightening, the cover-up becomes more precise, more creative and of higher quality.

Tattoo lightening not only helps to reduce the dark colours of the old tattoo, but also creates a more "neutral" base for the new design. This is especially important when the old tattoo has large, dark areas that can visually dominate the cover-up. With lightening, these dark areas are reduced, which allows the tattoo artist to plan the new tattoo more freely, without the limitations imposed by the old tattoo.

Without lightening, the new tattoo often has to be designed so that it covers the lines and colours of the old tattoo. With laser tattoo lightening, however, the artist can design the cover-up much more freely, with fewer compromises.

At Dermacare we use the PicoPulse laser from Spectra – an innovative system that combines the advantages of pico technologies and nanosecond technologies. Thanks to four wavelengths (1064, 532, 595 and 660 nanometres), the system enables effective treatment of almost all tattoo colours. The laser is characterised by high power and maximum precision, and contributes to good results in the process of tattoo lightening.

The short pulses and high laser power provide faster, more effective lightening of the pigments. In addition, the technology causes fewer thermal reactions in the tissue, which leads to faster recovery and prepares the skin optimally for a new cover-up.

A further advantage is the significantly lower level of pain compared with previous methods. Dermacare offers an innovative, effective and skin-gentle solution for anyone who wants to lighten their old tattoo and plan a stunning new design.

As you can see, tattoo lightening before a cover-up is an essential step on the way to a new, creative and aesthetic design. Lightening gives the tattoo artist creative freedom, so that the new design can cover the old one more effectively, with less interference from dark colours or old lines.

Do you have more questions about laser tattoo lightening?

The number of treatments required to remove a tattoo varies from person to person. Extremely small tattoos can in rare cases be removed within a small number of treatments, but usually it is a lengthy process. The number of treatments depends on various factors, such as whether the tattoo was done by an amateur or a professional, the colours and composition of the inks, the size of the tattoo and the texture of the skin, the depth and density of the ink, the response of the lymphatic system, and the quality of aftercare following removal. Usually, an improvement can be seen after each treatment, as the tattoo gradually fades. Complete removal always requires a series of treatments.

Yes. Pain may occur during tattoo removal, depending on individual sensitivity and the treated area. The sensation of pain is similar to that felt when the tattoo itself was applied.

Yes. The laser is capable of breaking down all colour pigments. However, black or dark blue tattoos are easier to remove. Light colours are more challenging to remove, as damage to the skin must be avoided. During the treatment, the colour of the tattoo may change, in which case several additional treatments may be needed.

The treated area will initially be red and swollen. If a scab forms, do not remove it, to prevent scarring. In people with very dark skin, pigmentation spots may appear. It is important to follow our treatment instructions in order to minimise the risk of bacterial infections.

No. Tattoo removal with Dermacare's Nd:YAG laser is gentle on the skin and does not leave scars, as long as the patient follows our practitioner's instructions. However, in people with particularly tanned skin, lighter areas of pigmentation may appear.

Before the treatment, avoid medications that increase sensitivity to light, unless they are taken regularly.
After the treatment, keep the area completely dry and clean for two days to prevent infection.
Throughout the whole course of treatments, it is recommended to avoid sun exposure on the tattoo area.

The duration of the treatment depends on the size of the tattoo and the cooling time afterwards. We allow at least 30 minutes for each treatment.

Yes. The area can be completely re-tattooed at a later stage.
